The Story Behind Mitti Attar
Centuries ago, the master perfumers of Kannauj, India's perfume capital, perfected the extraordinary art of capturing the enchanting aroma of the first monsoon rain falling on dry earth. This timeless fragrance, known as Mitti Attar, is one of the rarest and most fascinating natural perfumes in the world.
At Kannauj Perfume, we proudly preserve this centuries-old tradition. Using authentic techniques passed down through generations, our artisans transform baked clay into a luxurious natural attar that beautifully recreates the nostalgic scent of rain-soaked earth. Every drop reflects the rich heritage, craftsmanship, and legacy of the legendary perfumers of Kannauj.
The Making of Authentic
1. Carefully Selected Clay
The journey begins with carefully selected natural clay collected from fertile land. The clay is shaped into earthen pots and traditionally baked in a kiln until it develops the characteristic earthy aroma that defines genuine Kannauj Mitti Attar.
2. Traditional Deg & Bhapka Distillation
The baked clay is placed inside large handcrafted copper stills, locally known as Degs, filled with pure water. The distillation is carried out using the centuries-old Deg & Bhapka hydro-distillation technique, a process recognized as the hallmark of authentic Kannauj Attar production.
A controlled natural fire gently heats the copper stills, allowing aromatic vapors to travel through bamboo condensers into traditional receivers called Bhapkas. These vapors are absorbed into pure sandalwood oil, creating the rich, warm, and unmistakable fragrance of natural Mitti Attar.
Unlike modern industrial manufacturing, this slow artisanal process preserves the true essence of nature while maintaining the authenticity that has made Kannauj famous around the world.
